Event Date: Sun 23 April 2017
A varied walk with some interesting history.
We will go from the car park to Smitham Chimney (the last lead-smalting chimney on Mendip) and then head down hill to Garrow bottom and into Harptree Combe passing the site of former Richmonth Castle and an amazing aqueduct. At the end of the combe we will follow part of the Limestone Link up to Prospect Stile and Hinton Blewett (interesting church and pub). We will then work our way downhill to the Reservoir across fields and back to the carpark.
The route has some rough terrain, muddy patches and a couple of short uphill climbs so walking boots are essential.
Meet 10.30 at Forest Enterprise carpark at East Harptree Woods ref (Phone number removed) or arrange own lift from the car park opposite St Mary Redcliffe at 9.45am.
Directions from Bristol to Wells on the A39: At the Green Ore traffic lights turn right and follow road turning right just before the “Miners Arms”. Follow road to the “Castle of Comfort” and take the right hand of two lanes opposite signed to East Harptree. Follow road down and after a steep descent the entrance to the car park is on the left.
Bring packed lunch. Pub to finish
Walk leader: Brenda B (Phone number removed)
How do I join the walk?
Unless stated on the walk page, there is no need to sign up to join a walk. You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.
On many walks you can just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk. It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts. Some walks you will need to make your way to walk start or you can post on our facebook group to ask if you can share a lift there.
If sharing lifts passengers are expected to contribute towards petrol costs. Please bring coins or be prepared to make a bank transfer. As a guide, 30p/mile shared by everyone in the car.
How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?
We provide a full recommended kit list here. Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.
Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot. Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
