8:30am 2+ Boot: The Malverns Beacons (20s-30s)

Event Date: Sun 23 July 2017

13 miles

From the car park
we will make our way to Gullet Quarry, a local beauty spot, before
climbing up through the woods onto the Malvern Ridge where we will
ascend Herefordshire Beacon. This is also the site of the British Camp
Iron Age Fort where a number of earthworks and defensive ditches can
be seen. Having descended, we will stay close to the base of the Ridge
and follow local footpaths along the valley through fields and woods
until we are at the bottom of Worcestershire Beacon.

This part of the walk is the most strenuous. We will climb up
Worcestershire Beacon and bag the trig point marking the highest point
in the Malvern’s. We will then return the way we have come albeit on
top of the Ridge instead of along the valley. This involves a number
of steep ascents and descents as we go up and over Summer Hill,
Perseverance Hill, Jubilee Hill, Pinnacle Hill and Black Hill. Your
efforts we will be more than well rewarded with breath-taking views on
all sides throughout this section of the return leg.

We will eventually reach the base of Herefordshire Beacon once more
however, fear not, we shall not be climbing up a second time. Instead
we take the flatter route back, skirting round the base of the hill
back to the car park.

Car park is £4 all day. Pub is a 2 minute drive
away.

How do I join the walk?

Unless stated on the walk page, there is no need to sign up to join a walk. You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.

On many walks you can just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk. It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts. Some walks you will need to make your way to walk start or you can post on our facebook group to ask if you can share a lift there.

If sharing lifts passengers are expected to contribute towards petrol costs. Please bring coins or be prepared to make a bank transfer. As a guide, 30p/mile shared by everyone in the car.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.

Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot.  Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
