Starting from the pub Tafarn y Garreg, ascend Fan y Gyhirych (725m), admire the views! Descend and cross the main road, then over an unclassified summit at 550m, then across the valley and up to the lake Llan y Fan Fawr (2nd lunch there by the lake), then up Black Mountain and back along the ridge (amazing views) and down to the pub where we started out from (nice pub!) Forecast is for great weather, bring sun hats and lots of sun protection, plus good footwear and plenty of water. Walk was invented by Wayne McQuaig in 2015.

About Brunel Walking Group

Thanks for visiting us! Brunel Walking Group is for young(ish) people in the Bristol and Bath area who love the countryside and like to get outside on a weekend.

What is Brunel Walking Group?

Brunel is a thriving group with over 400 members and is part of The Ramblers charity. All of our walk leaders and committee members are volunteers, dedicated to sharing our fantastic countryside with others.  Read more on our FAQs page

How do I join the walk?

There is no need to sign up to join a walk, just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk.  You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.  It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts, but drivers often appreciate it when a voluntary contribution is made by passengers towards their costs.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.

Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot.  Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
