3 Boot Longleat, Stourhead National Trust, King Alfred’s Tower (Joint Walk)

Event Date: Sat 30 April 2022

This walk is in the past.

Starting from near Longleat we head south via rolling countryside and the White Sheet Downs to Mere (ice cream stop), then we head towards National Trust Stourhead. We won't enter any of the areas you need to be a member to access, but we will go right past the main house, we will also visit the cafe! From there we follow an old carriage drive towards King Alfred's Tower and then follow woodland tracks back to the Longleat estate, we'll approach the house via the long drive. All being well, we will have a last snack and drink at the Heaven's Gate viewpoint around sunset overlooking the estate from where you can also hear the wild animals. Fish and chips in Warminster to follow the walk (must get there before 10pm). Please remember sun hat, sun cream, sun glasses, plenty of food and drink (though remember you can stock up at Mere (about 1/3 of the way in) and refill bottles at Stourhead. In total there is about 1000m of climbing, though no really big hills, just an undulating route. I'd say this is no harder than one of the big Brecons walks I've led, its just a bit longer and flatter. Please text me if you are coming.

How do I join the walk?

Unless stated on the walk page, there is no need to sign up to join a walk. You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.

On many walks you can just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk. It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts. Some walks you will need to make your way to walk start or you can post on our facebook group to ask if you can share a lift there.

If sharing lifts passengers are expected to contribute towards petrol costs. Please bring coins or be prepared to make a bank transfer. As a guide, 30p/mile shared by everyone in the car.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.

Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot.  Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
