We'll start from the Cadira Beeches car park in the Wentwood (careful on the single-track lanes to get there if you're driving!), first heading towards the northern edge of the woods, before turning south and climbing Grey Hill where there are some potential old bits of hill fort and, if the weather is kind, a bit of a Severn view.
We'll then wend our way on paths and single-track roads past the Wentwood Reservoir to Llanvaches and then past the Rock & Fountain Inn and Penhow Castle before climbing back up into the Wentwood.
Some paths are rough and stony (walking boots/shoes recommended), others quite overgrown with bracken and brambles (although I had a good go at them on the pre-walk to make sure we could pass!) and one through a crop field where the path was not kept well clear. There may some tasty blackberries to compensate a little! Beware scratches from the brambles and I suspect this is probably tick territory, so check for any unwanted passengers during and after the walk (I don't appear to have picked any up from the pre-walk).
There were many dog-walkers when I pre-walked, some sheep, cows and many horses around (plus possibly a couple of alpacas!). We will be walking through fields with horses...unless they get upset with that and I decide it's best to re-route.
There are some awkward styles, overgrown gates, a gate to climb over and one or two fallen trees to navigate along the route. Also one or two steep sections where good grip/a pole might be handy.
Remember to bring plenty of water, some snacks and maybe even a coat (although the risk of a shower seems to have gone as I list this...could still be useful to protect yourself from scratchy brambles!).
