This walk is in the past.
We'll start with a steep climb from the Rock of Ages parking area up to a nice view over the combe. We'll have views of Black Down to the south as we walk, which I noticed was described as 'bleak' and 'desolate' on one of the signs - so obviously we'll then head up to Beacon Batch, the highest point of the Black Down!
Next we'll head over into the woodland of Roberrow Warren and on to Star, before turning back towards Burrington Combe via Dolebury Warren. We'll pass a cave entrance or two on the way back where we can puzzle over how and why people wriggle down such small holes in the ground!
There is a lot of uneven ground on this walk, with some rocks, mud and wet leaves making things slippery. There is also some splashing through shallow streams, so waterproof footwear is very much recommended! We'll pass through some areas with cows and sheep.
If there's a concensus on wanting a pub stop after lunch, we could stop by The Star Inn (Star) or make a short detour to The Crown Inn (Churchill).
We'll be going up and down a bit, but bring some layers for the exposed walking on the 'bleak' and 'desolate' Black Down! Bring a sit mat or something to sit on when we stop for picnic lunch / snacks.
