09:00 1+ Boot Mendips- Compton Martin, Blagdon & Chew Valley (joint walk)

Event Date: Sat 17 January 2026
Event Time: 09:00

This walk is in the past.

9 Mile walk (300m of ascent) in the Mendips. Starting in Compton Martin going up through the woods to the top of the hill then heading west through woods and fields with good views of Blagdon and Chew Valley lakes. We will head up to the trig point at the highest point of the Mendips then down to Blagdon and across to Ubley and Compton Martin. This is a harder 1 boot (more ascent than normal) or an easier 2 boot.

Bring a pack lunch and suitable clothing for the weather, including full waterproofs and warm layers. Paths could be muddy in places so walking boots advised.

Either meet at the water tower for 9 to organise lifts, or in Compton Martin for 9.45 if going direct (the walk leader will be going direct to start point). Parking is limited in Compton Martin but there are normally a few places by the duck pond, or the pub car park could be an option for anyone who’d like to join me there for breakfast before we start. The simplest route to Compton Martin is south from Bristol along the A38 or A37 and then along the A368.

Bring packed lunch. Pub to finish.

How do I join the walk?

Unless stated on the walk page, there is no need to sign up to join a walk. You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.

On many walks you can just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk. It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts. Some walks you will need to make your way to walk start or you can post on our facebook group to ask if you can share a lift there.

If sharing lifts passengers are expected to contribute towards petrol costs. Please bring coins or be prepared to make a bank transfer. As a guide, 30p/mile shared by everyone in the car.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.

Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot.  Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
