Event Date: Sat 29 February 2020
Event Time: 10am
As this walk takes place on 29th February, if you miss it, you will have to wait 4 years for it to re-appear….
We start in Chepstow near the ruined castle. From there, we climb out of the town before descending to the River Wye down steep-sided wooded slopes. Above us tower the limestone cliffs of Wintour’s Leap (see what I did there?); a spot that is popular with rock climbers. Wintour’s Leap is named after Sir John Wintour who is said to have survived leaping off the cliff on his horse landing safely in the river below. We then follow the river to a ruined church and the abandoned village of Lancaut. There are lovely views of the River Wye, its meandering course and the cliffs on either side.
Climbing away from the river again, we follow lanes and paths over fields to the hamlet of Boughspring. (Spring, like leap, see??) We then return to Chepstow over farm land.
Although a one boot in length, please be aware that there is a section along the river where it is necessary to scramble over boulders and there are two climbs up from the river. Total ascent during the walk c 300m. It’s also likely to be muddy on the farm land.
The car park is pay & display and costs £4.80 for the day. You will need some change. Please share the parking cost between those in your car.
It would be appreciated if those who are Bristol-based come to the central meeting point to ensure we have enough car sharing spaces rather than driving straight to Chepstow.
Bring packed lunch.
Pub to finish.
If sharing lifts passengers are expected to contribute towards petrol costs. Please bring coins or be prepared to make a bank transfer.
As a guide, 30p/mile shared by everyone in the car.
How do I join the walk?
Unless stated on the walk page, there is no need to sign up to join a walk. You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.
On many walks you can just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk. It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts. Some walks you will need to make your way to walk start or you can post on our facebook group to ask if you can share a lift there.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?
We provide a full recommended kit list here. Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.
Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot. Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
