This is a one way walk from Temple Cloud, following the route of the old Somerset Coal Canal from Paulton to the Kennet and Avon Canal nr Dundas Aqueduct nr Monkton Combe. Please catch the 376 bus at 9:01 from Bristol Bus station and get off at Temple Cloud at 9:45 at the bus stop called 'Temple Bridge Farm' where I will meet you.
The walk is pretty flat as it follows the canal route; there are only a few small hills where the route deviates slightly off the canal route in places. The walk ends near where the canal joins the Kennet and Avon Canal nr Monkton Combe where we will have drinks and snacks at the Angel Fish cafe by the canal there which also has a visitor centre with toilets and info anout the history of the canal. From there we will catch the D1 bus to Bath which takes 15 mins and runs hourly until beyond midnight (likely catch the 17:12 bus). From Bath you can get the X39 bus back to Bristol (there is a train strike scheduled). If you want to drive to Temple Cloud for the walk start, after the walk, you could get the 172 bus from Bath - Bristol and get off in Temple Cloud to retrieve your car (journey takes 1hr via Radstock), I have not researched parking in Temple Cloud, but the 172 bus runs till late & is twice hourly.
Please bring decent walking footwear & clothing, food and drink and something to sit on when we have lunch.
The Somerset Coal Canal was active from 1805-1898 and ran from the Paulton canal basin to the Kennet and Avon Canal at Dundas Aqueduct and was used to transport coal. Much of the canal is still in place, we will also see the old railway, the Camerton branch line which was built to replace the canal and was closed in 1951.
