Event Date: Sun 18 October 2015
This walk is welcome to all and includes an opportunity for 3 people to practice navigation skills.
Starting from Win Green car park we head in an easterly direction along the ox drove to Bigley Buildings. We have good views down the escarpment to valleys, hills and villages. We then turn south taking a route through Chase Woods to Tollard Royal from where we take the Wessex Ridgeway back to Win Green.
Bring packed lunch, pub to finish.
Meet: 9:00am St Mary Redcliffe or alternatively 10:30am at Win Green car park (OS map ref ST 923204).
We are aiming to include some walks in the programme that enable people to practice their navigation skills. We require 3 people to sign up for this. It is expected that they will have some prior knowledge of the basics (such as setting the map, setting and following a bearing, identifying features, understanding contours, working out distance and timing). At three set points on the walk the leader will spend about 15 minutes on navigation issues and ask one person to lead a leg of the walk up to about 1km (essential to work in metres and kilometres for good navigation!). All are welcome on the walk – they will have the opportunity for an extra short break during the 15 minute navigation sessions.
If you would like to sign up for the training please email Brunel walking group or contact Ian (the walk leader).
Leader: Ian (Phone number removed)
How do I join the walk?
Unless stated on the walk page, there is no need to sign up to join a walk. You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.
On many walks you can just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk. It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts. Some walks you will need to make your way to walk start or you can post on our facebook group to ask if you can share a lift there.
If sharing lifts passengers are expected to contribute towards petrol costs. Please bring coins or be prepared to make a bank transfer. As a guide, 30p/mile shared by everyone in the car.
How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?
We provide a full recommended kit list here. Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.
Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot. Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
