This walk is a local gem, i have walked this area many times and each time have had to pinch myself that i am still in Bristol!
Starting in Westbury Village we make our way to Blaise Castle Estate via the golf course and through a lovely wooded area alongside the river Trym before ascending up through the spectacular gorge and taking in the extensive views from the Castle folly. We continue upwards towards Kingsweston Estate via the iron age hill fort and farmstead dating back to 800BC, in use until Roman times, and following along the ridge we eventually come into Kingsweston Estate (through a gap in the roadside foliage due to the footbridge being shut, awaiting maintenance) where we complete a circuit of the grounds before stopping for tea and cake at the lovely Kingsweston House Cafe with striking views across to Avonmouth and the Severn Estuary.
Following our break we retrace our steps back to the open grassland of Blaise, then pass the house / museum and round the corner into St. Mary’s Churchyard in Henbury, the site of the well-known grave of Bristol slave Scipio Africanus, then continuing through the tunnel leading to “The Royals” grassland and up through the woods, emerging by the “The Rustic Lodge” (a curious little Hansel & Gretel style timber built house) then we join the “Rhododendron walk” which takes us past spectacular views of majestic beech trees and back down to the bottom of the gorge where we then retrace our steps back to Westbury Village for Sunday roast lunch at the White Lion pub.
