09:30 2 Boot A Wander from Saltford (Joint Walk)

Event Date: Sun 22 February 2026
Event Time: 09:30

This walk is in the past.

A walk along paths by the Avon and through woodlands and fields from Saltford. We pass Bath Spa University grounds before getting out into the fields on our way out to Hunstrete, then wander back to Saltford via Compton Dando.

Not overly hilly - 270m of ascent & descent.

There were no livestock in the fields we pass through during my pre-walk, although there have been when I've walked the route before. No stiles to clamber over, but many gates. There are some busy roads we'll need to take care crossing.

Some paths are very slippery, wet and muddy - boots/waterproof footwear highly recommended, as some of the big puddles are unavoidable...and a change of footwear (or flamboyant socks?) if stopping in the pub for a drink at the end of the walk or getting a lift with someone. A walking pole could be handy navigating some of the slippery bits or deep puddles, although it can be done without one.

The forecast looks a bit drizzly, so bring waterproofs, but hopefully we'll get a few glimpses of the sun! Bringing something waterproof to sit on when we stop for lunch would be useful too.

The parking areas on The Shallows are restricted to 3 hours maximum - as we'll take 5-6 hours, drivers will need to find on-road spaces on High Street or nearby side roads.

It's possible to travel by bus from Bristol/Bath Google suggests (bus 39/X39), or cycle and leave a bike at the back of the Bird in Hand pub.

There is free parking on the single yellow lines just outside Portwall Lane car park on Sundays, or in the pay and display spaces on the road next to St Mary Redcliffe.

Bring packed lunch. Pub to finish.

How do I join the walk?

Unless stated on the walk page, there is no need to sign up to join a walk. You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.

On many walks you can just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk. It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts. Some walks you will need to make your way to walk start or you can post on our facebook group to ask if you can share a lift there.

If sharing lifts passengers are expected to contribute towards petrol costs. Please bring coins or be prepared to make a bank transfer. As a guide, 30p/mile shared by everyone in the car.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.

Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot.  Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
