08.55 2 Boot Best of the Mendips (Joint Walk)

Event Date: Sat 8 August 2026
Event Time: 08:55

This walk is in the past.

Circular route starting from Cliff Street (paid) Car park in Cheddar, heading up the west side of the gorge, with views across to Cheddar reservoir and Glastonbury Tor. We'll continue climbing, ultimately reaching Beacon Batch (the highest point of the mendips) with panoramic views. We'll then head to Charterhouse via the Wireless Station, and visit Velvet Bottom nature reserve and Black Rock, before climbing back up the east side of the gorge (more views!) and ending back in Cheddar.

Note, I have put this walk on at the last minute to replace a cancellation, so I have not had the opportunity to do a recent pre-walk. There is the possibility of path closures, which may mean we have to re-route a bit. There are some steep climbs and descents, plus walkers have reported some overgrown stretches of path. We are likely to see animals, including goats and ponies, and there is a possibility of livestock. There are some steep drops away from the path, and short stretches on roads.

Please bring plenty of food and water, alongside suncream and footwear suitable for rugged terrain. Small possibility of light rain in the morning so bring a rain jacket. Possibility of pub or cafe to finish in Cheddar.

Meet at the watertower on the downs 08.55, driving to Cliff Street car park in Cheddar. Aiming to start walking at around 09.45.

Bring packed lunch. Pub to finish.

How do I join the walk?

Unless stated on the walk page, there is no need to sign up to join a walk. You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.

On many walks you can just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk. It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts. Some walks you will need to make your way to walk start or you can post on our facebook group to ask if you can share a lift there.

If sharing lifts passengers are expected to contribute towards petrol costs. Please bring coins or be prepared to make a bank transfer. As a guide, 30p/mile shared by everyone in the car.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.

Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot.  Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
