08:00 2 Boot Sugarloaf Circular (Joint Walk)

Event Date: Sun 18 February 2024
Event Time: 08:00

This walk is in the past.

Meeting at the Down's Water Tower at 08.00 with the aim of leaving 08.10 latest, once car shares are organised. The car park only has about 7 spaces, which is why we are starting so early.

This will be a 18.7 km/11.6 mile walk in Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, with 869m ascent, including 4 peaks. I estimate it should take 5-6 hours including breaks. It is a harder 2 boot. Please bring warm clothing and full waterproofs including waterproof hiking boots, as I anticipate it will be very wet under foot.

The walk ascends steeply from the car park through woodland to Deri Allt (367m), before walking along the hill tops at a more gentle incline, with a further steep ascent to the top of Sugar Loaf (596m) with panoramic views. We'll then descend into a river valley (wet under foot!) where we will stop for lunch. The route then curves back around, with sections on quiet roads, before ascending back up to Mynydd Llanwenarth (410m) and back along the hill tops to Rholben (338m) before descending back down to the carpark. Optional pub stop in Abergavenny before heading home.

Bring packed lunch. Pub to finish.

How do I join the walk?

Unless stated on the walk page, there is no need to sign up to join a walk. You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.

On many walks you can just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk. It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts. Some walks you will need to make your way to walk start or you can post on our facebook group to ask if you can share a lift there.

If sharing lifts passengers are expected to contribute towards petrol costs. Please bring coins or be prepared to make a bank transfer. As a guide, 30p/mile shared by everyone in the car.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.

Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot.  Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
