Join us on a day trip to Salisbury. We will take the train from Temple Meads to Salisbury (the train also stops at Bath) and then explore this medieval cathedral city with its historic buildings, archaeological remains, rivers and water meadows.
From the station, we will follow the River Avon through fields to the ancient site of Old Sarum. This iron age hillfort, which was also occupied by Romans, Saxons and Normans, was the original Salisbury
before the settlement moved down the hill to the city we see today. If it’s clear, there are good views from the ramparts across Salisbury Plain. We then return to the town to walk through the bustling market area and past the cathedral. The final leg of the walk takes us across water meadows with a view of the cathedral made famous by Constable’s painting.
The walk will finish mid afternoon, but there are then various options including wandering round the historic city centre, visiting the cathedral and museums, sitting in a pub/café or a combination of all
the above. Trains return to Bristol/Bath every hour so you can stay as long as you like, maybe even staying for food.
Bring packed lunch. Pub to finish.
PS Decent toilet stops during the walk are some of the most numerous ever seen!
Meet: 9:10 (latest) at Temple Meads Station, Bristol, catching the 09:22 train. Alternatively meet on the train at Bath station (09:35) or at Salisbury station (10:31).
