8:30 : 3 Boot – Black Mountains high level round – 17.5 miles / 28 km, 700m ascent

Event Date: Sun 20 September 2015

A great high level walk in the Black Mountains with the prospect of good views of autumn colours in the valleys. Starting at Llanthony Priory there is a relatively short ascent onto the Offa’s Dyke and most of the day is spent at high level with a short final descent back to Llanthony. We follow the Offa’s Dyke along to Hay Bluff then west along the edge of the escarpment past Lord Hereford’s Knob to the 713m trig point. In a southerly direction we maintain high level all the way back to Bal Mawr (607m trig point) and then drop back down into Llanthony.

This is a little longer than the average Brunel Plus 3 boot but is on good hill paths most of the way. For those who enjoy a good high level walk it will be great if the conditions are good. In poor conditions we have the option to shorten the walk by following the ridge and spur from Lord Hereford’s Knob down to Capel y Fin, then the road back to Llanthony (about 14 miles / 24 km, 600m ascent).

Bring packed lunch, pub to finish.
Meet: 8.30am at Aldi/Pizza Hut car park Bradley Stoke or alternatively at Llanthony Priory car park ready for a 10.00am start.
Leader: Ian (Phone number removed)

This walk is in the past.

Group: Brunel Plus

How do I join the walk?

Unless stated on the walk page, there is no need to sign up to join a walk. You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.

On many walks you can just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk. It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts. Some walks you will need to make your way to walk start or you can post on our facebook group to ask if you can share a lift there.

If sharing lifts passengers are expected to contribute towards petrol costs. Please bring coins or be prepared to make a bank transfer. As a guide, 30p/mile shared by everyone in the car.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.

Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot.  Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
