15:00 1 Boot Afternoon/Evening Walk: Harbourside Summertime Delights (Joint Walk)

Event Date: Sat 15 July 2017
Event Time: 15:00

6 miles

This will be an afternoon walk starting and finishing near Bristol’s Floating Harbour.

We wander gently along the harbourside, enjoying the delights of boats cavorting in the waters.  We will cross over the newly reopened bridge across the New Cut near the Create Centre, and may be lucky enough to see some of the metrobus works in progress.  We pass along the footpath by the river with lovely views of the suspension bridge, passing underneath and ready ourselves for the steep climb up the infamous Nightingale valley, in the shade of the ancient trees of Leigh Woods, and we may even be rewarded by the sight of a blackbird or robin.

At the top we cross into Ashton Court, where depending on time and weather we can walk around the top of the golf course (an extra 1.36 miles), or pass straight over.  We will go through lovely summer meadows and grasses, and after our steep climb we will be rewarded by beautiful views of our lovely City of Bristol, as we gently descend through Ashton Court back to the harbourside. We pass the Create Centre and the working shipyard, along past the Cottage Inn (also an option for food and drink) and back along the river. We will finish around the hostelries of Gaol Ferry steps, where some eating and drinking may ensue. Those unable to walk are welcome to join us for a beverage in the evening.

Distance 7.64 miles (or 6.08 miles) depending on the golf course. Ascent 207 mts.

How do I join the walk?

Unless stated on the walk page, there is no need to sign up to join a walk. You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.

On many walks you can just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk. It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts. Some walks you will need to make your way to walk start or you can post on our facebook group to ask if you can share a lift there.

If sharing lifts passengers are expected to contribute towards petrol costs. Please bring coins or be prepared to make a bank transfer. As a guide, 30p/mile shared by everyone in the car.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.

Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot.  Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
