09:15 1 Boot Cheddar Gorge and Beacon Batch Loop (20s & 30s Walk)

Event Date: Sun 31 August 2025
Event Time: 09:15

This walk is in the past.

This is a beautiful 15km loop from the town of Cheddar. We will see both sides of the beautiful Cheddar Gorge, and make our way up to the highest point in the Mendips, Beacon Batch, from which you get views stretching across the channel to Wales. We'll finish back in Cheddar where we'll either go for a drink or an ice cream (...or both) depending on numbers.

For those travelling from Bristol, meet at the Downs Water Tower at 9:15am where we will arrange lift-sharing. We'll start the walk from the Cliff Street Car Park at 10am (residential parking + other car parks are around if needed).

At the end of the walk, there are a couple of options; either the Holly House Tea Rooms where the ice cream is very good, or The White Hart pub (if there are too many for the tea room), where there is a very nice beer garden.

The weather may well be very hot; if so, bring sun cream and plenty of water. Note that we will walk through tall foliage so wear long walking trousers if you wish to avoid getting any ticks. There's a sustained descent from the gorge at the end so walking poles may be useful.

How do I join the walk?

Unless stated on the walk page, there is no need to sign up to join a walk. You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.

On many walks you can just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk. It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts. Some walks you will need to make your way to walk start or you can post on our facebook group to ask if you can share a lift there.

If sharing lifts passengers are expected to contribute towards petrol costs. Please bring coins or be prepared to make a bank transfer. As a guide, 30p/mile shared by everyone in the car.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.

Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot.  Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
