09:00 3 Boot Northern Brecons loop from Pencelli 30km (Joint Walk)

Event Date: Sat 4 May 2024
Event Time: 09:00

This walk is in the past.

We will park at Pencelli and from there follow lanes and tracks on the Three Rivers Ride Route (no horse needed) round the north of the Brecons (past public toilets at Llanfrynach early on), this first half of the walk is just gently undulating with no major climbs. Then we start to ascend up towards Corn Du past the Tarn of Llyn Cwm Llwch (1st lunch), then over Pen y Fan, Cribyn, then up to the ridgeline nr Fan y Big (2nd lunch) and from there we will follow the ridge line which gradually descends via Pen y Byrn (afternoon tea) and on down towards Pencelli and the pub. The latter part of the walk in the evening light with great views from the ridgeline is my favourite part of this route; I've not done this walk for several years. Its 29.7km / 18.6 miles and includes 1300m of ascent (plotted with OS Maps online). Please bring good walking footwear, suitable clothing including some warm layers, sun hat, sun glasses, suncream, something to sit on when we stop for breaks & plenty of food and drink. The mountain weather forecast for Saturday looks good.

We will sort out car sharing at the meet point and we'll sort it such that any of you who walk to the meet point can be dropped off more centrally in Bristol when we return as the roads are a bit dark and isolated round Avonmeads in the eve.

Bring packed lunch. Pub to finish.

How do I join the walk?

Unless stated on the walk page, there is no need to sign up to join a walk. You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.

On many walks you can just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk. It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts. Some walks you will need to make your way to walk start or you can post on our facebook group to ask if you can share a lift there.

If sharing lifts passengers are expected to contribute towards petrol costs. Please bring coins or be prepared to make a bank transfer. As a guide, 30p/mile shared by everyone in the car.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.

Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot.  Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
