8.30 3 Boot: Banwell, Crook Peak and Bleadon Hill (Joint Walk)

Event Date: Sun 6 January 2019
Event Time: 8.30

Starting outside the Brewers Arm in Banwell, we head up over Banwell Hill to enjoy views of the Somerset Levels then dropping down across fields to Barton. Heading up a footpath to join the West Mendip Way at Compton Hill, hopefully enjoying more views as we head along to Crook Peak. We then drop down off the ridge coming out by the Webbington Hotel. Cross the bridge over the M5 before climbing up Bleadon Hill on the West Mendip Way. With a short period of walking along a quiet road on Bleadon Hill before heading past the golf club back onto footpaths to transverse the ridge through some quiet woodland on Hutton Hill. Then crossing the M5 on a different bridge back towards Banwell for a pint in the pub.

This 12.5 mile walk involves 3 fair size climbs with approx. 1900 ft of elevation gain. Walking boots are a must as although only a few sections were very muddy, due to the run off from the hills some of the paths could contain running surface water if it’s rained recently. The footpath off the back of Crook Peak contains a few short rocky sections which can be slippery in the wet so care is required.

Bring packed lunch. Pub to finish.

About Brunel Walking Group

Thanks for visiting us! Brunel Walking Group is for young(ish) people in the Bristol and Bath area who love the countryside and like to get outside on a weekend.

What is Brunel Walking Group?

Brunel is a thriving group with over 400 members and is part of The Ramblers charity. All of our walk leaders and committee members are volunteers, dedicated to sharing our fantastic countryside with others.  Read more on our FAQs page

How do I join the walk?

There is no need to sign up to join a walk, just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk.  You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.  It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts, but drivers often appreciate it when a voluntary contribution is made by passengers towards their costs.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.

Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot.  Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
