9.45am 1 Boot: We Own It, Avon Area Themed Walk (Joint with Bristol Ramblers)

Event Date: Sat 17 February 2018
Event Time: 9.45am

5 miles

This is a linear walk which takes in St Anne’s Wood, Arnos Vale and finishes at Temple Meads.

The walk celebrates the fact that this ancient walking route is now a public right of way owned by Bristol City Council.  For centuries, since medieval times, the route between Keynsham, St Anne’s Well and Barton Hill was used by packhorses and pilgrims.  This was abruptly ended when James Sinnott, a solicitor, bought the wood, put locks at one entrance and stopped the ferry boat service.  The Bristol and District Footpath Preservation Society, led by the Bishop of Bath & Wells and a committee, grappled with this access problem for 6 years and won.

Meet 9.45am at Lawrence Hill Railway Station BS5 9JG, Grid ref: ST609733.  The walk will start on the arrival of the 9:16am train from Avonmouth.  Expected finish time 13:00 at Temple Meads.

About Brunel Walking Group

Thanks for visiting us! Brunel Walking Group is for young(ish) people in the Bristol and Bath area who love the countryside and like to get outside on a weekend.

What is Brunel Walking Group?

Brunel is a thriving group with more than 400 members. All of our walk leaders and committee members are volunteers, dedicated to sharing our fantastic countryside with others.  Read more on our FAQs page

How do I join the walk?

There is no need to sign up to join a walk, just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk.  You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.  It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts, but drivers often appreciate it when a voluntary contribution is made by passengers towards their costs.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.

Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot.  Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
