to see if it affects your journey.  It’s mainly the Portway, Hotwells Road, Cumberland Road, Jacob Wells Road and Anchor Road.

13.5 miles

Starting NE of Sugar Loaf the walk starts uphill straight away as we head to the summit. We then head down and cross the Grwyne Fawr before picking up the Beacons way to climb Crug Mawr. We keep following the Beacons way for a while before a short steep climb to the old Fort above Coed y Cerrig. Then to finish we skirt around Bryn Arw back to the car park.

This walk has 1200m of climbing spread over 3 and a bit hills. Mostly following good paths although some parts could be muddy.

Bring a packed lunch. Pub to finish.

About Brunel Walking Group

Thanks for visiting us! Brunel Walking Group is for young(ish) people in the Bristol and Bath area who love the countryside and like to get outside on a weekend.

What is Brunel Walking Group?

Brunel is a thriving group with more than 400 members. All of our walk leaders and committee members are volunteers, dedicated to sharing our fantastic countryside with others.  Read more on our FAQs page

How do I join the walk?

There is no need to sign up to join a walk, just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk.  You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.  It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts, but drivers often appreciate it when a voluntary contribution is made by passengers towards their costs.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.

Walks are graded as either 1 boot, 2 boot or 3 boot.  Read more about choosing the right walk for your fitness level here,
