8:15 3 Boot Return to Hay Bluff (20s & 30s)

13.5 miles

We’ll climb immediately to the snow-free summit of Hay Bluff, to then follow Offa’s Dyke south. A strenuous, steep-sided crossing of the Vale of Ewys comes next, passing through Capel-Y-Ffin. The next ridge will lead us up to Rhos Dirion (the highest point on our walk) before returning to the cars via Lord Hereford’s Knob (yes, really).

Total elevation is around 850m. We’ll be close to 700m above sea level so please bring plenty of water and pack for all weather conditions (except snow). I’d grade this as a high-end 2 Boot/low 3 Boot, in the Black Mountains of South Wales.

How do I join the walk?

There is no need to sign up to join a walk, just turn up at the meeting point where we will share lifts to the start of the walk.  You’re very welcome to try out 1 or 2 walks before you join, but we do insist that after that you join the Brunel Walking Group.  It’s OK if you don’t drive – we normally have enough drivers who are able to give lifts, but drivers often appreciate it when a voluntary contribution is made by passengers towards their costs.

How do I know what to bring? And am I fit enough?

We provide a full recommended kit list here.  Please do bring water, a rainproof jacket, walking trousers (or similar) and walking shoes/boots – avoid jeans and trainers.
