This walk takes in the open hilltops and large scenery of the Black Mountains. Starting from Crickhowell, we hook around the distinctive Table Mountain. Then climb to the viewpoint of Pen Cerrig-calch. From there stroll along the ridge to Pen Allt-mawr, and should reach Pen Twyn Glas for lunch. After that it’s more or less downhill! We follow the parallel ridge down, granting an impressive side profile view of the main ridge. After a short bit of road, we skirt once again around Table Mountain on the way back to Crickhowell.
There is the option to stay for a drink in one of the pubs in Crickhowell afterwards. We should finish walking by 5.30pm. Those who would like to travel back straight away should be back in Bristol by 6.45pm.
Bring plenty of water – 2-3 litres advised, especially if warm. Also protective head gear like a cap or hat, it’s very exposed most of the way and the sun can be strong. Of course bring sun cream too, though this is Wales so likely also worth bringing waterproofs! Bring packed lunch and snacks for the way, there’s no food until we get back to Crickhowell, unless you’re good at foraging!
Meet at the water tower in Clifton for 8.30am. We should be in Crickhowell for 9.45am.
