| Just
occasionally, a change to our walks programme may
be necessary. We will endeavour to update the website,
but the best way to make sure you have the latest
programme is to be on our email list. That way you
get your new and amended programmes without having
to check back here - and it's probably much easier
to print! |

Walking |

You
don't necessarily need to do a lot to be prepared
for a day's walking, but
please read our 'Before
Walking' page so you know what to wear
and what to bring, to make sure you and everyone
else has an enjoyable and safe day. |

Walk
Gradings |
|
To
choose an appropriate walk please read the walk
descriptions along with their gradings - we grade
our walks from 1 boot to 3, as explained below.
Walks with a + sign after the grading indicate
that the terrain or pace of the walk will be slightly
harder or faster than would be expected for the
associated number. A “Bring packed lunch”
in the walk description means that the lunch stop
will be away from shops or pubs and refreshments
will not be available en-route.... |
|
|
|
Less
than 16km/10miles generally on recognizable paths,
between 2 to 5 hours walking at a reasonably gentle
pace. May involve an occasional hill but always
includes time to stop and look around. |
|
|
|
Up
to 22km/14miles and between 4 to 7 hours walking
at a moderate pace. The terrain is likely to include
hills and some rough ground. It will be suitable
for most walkers or anyone of reasonable fitness. |
|
|
|
A
full day of fairly strenuous walking, generally
over 22km/14miles and may involve long steep ascents
and descents, with the possibility of exposed
ridges and the odd scramble (often not on recognized
paths). If you are new to the group please check
with the leader about the difficulty of the walk.

Box
Hill (near Bath) 9 miles
A
picturesque and varied walk along a riverbank
and through woodland and hills with many sights
including the dramatic entrance to Brunel's famous
Box Tunnel, a farm with peacocks, geese and turkeys,
several manor houses (one of which we go through
the gardens of), a disused quarry which has been
converted to tennis courts, and a tumbledown cottage
with a tree growing out of its chimney!
Several long steep climbs (which could be slippery
if wet) means this is a 1+ boot and not suitable
for absolute beginners. There are 2 pubs in Box
for drinks and snacks afterwards (the Queens Head
has a beer garden). Bring PL.
Depart: 10.30am St Mary Redcliffe
car park, Bristol or 11.15am at Market Place car

A
great opportunity to walk into Bristol, the scenic

do this. A linear walk, enjoying lovely
views of the Bristol Channel, Gordano Valley,

more bluebells and no big hills! Bring packed

for beers, and maybe some food, in one of the

Walk |
Big
Black Mountain Challenge. 2 or 3 boot.
If
you want to test how hill fit you are, you could
try the Big Black Mountain Challenge. Actually,
you don't need to be super-fit at all, as there
is a choice of routes - 10, 18 and 27 miles.
Brilliant terrain with top class organisation,
the BBMC is the main fundraiser for the Longtown
Mountain Rescue Team, who serve an area in which
we regularly walk. We've always known that
it could just take a twisted ankle for us to need
to call out these guys, so this is your opportunity
to support them as well as enjoying a great day
on the hills. Bring packed lunch.
You
need to enter well ahead as entries will fill
before the day. Complete and send an Entry Form then drop
a note to the group account telling us you'll
be doing it, and we'll come up with the co-ordinated
plan, including transport. We will likely
lead for the longer distances.

Waun
Fach for 1-Booters. 8 miles
Following the success of the 1-boot ascent of
Pen-y-fan, it's now time for another mountain.
Although smaller than Pen-y-fan (886m), at 810m
Waun Fach is the highest of the Black Mountains
(the eastern region of the Brecon Beacons National
Park). If you did the Pen-y-fan walk then you'll
find Waun Fach quite achievable. As before, we'll
be taking it easy and allowing each person to
walk at their own pace. If you missed Pen-y-fan,
then here's your chance to make up for it.
Bring packed lunch, and plenty of water. You'll
need proper walking boots and clothing suitable
for all weathers - no jeans, no trainers (or high-heels).
Depart: 9:30am at the Water Tower on the
Downs.
